| Water
chestnut is a rooted, floating plant that invades
aquatic habitats. This rooted plant can grow in 12
to 15 feet of water.
Leaves are triangular in
shape and strongly toothed. The rosette of floating
leaves is connected to an inflated petiole, increasing
buoyancy.
Small four-petaled flowers
give way to the nut-like fruit. The fruit have four
½ inch sharp, barbed spines. It forms dense
floating mats, often three layers deep, that restrict
light availability, reduce the oxygen content, and
displace other emergent and floating vegetation.
